So You Wanna Chase Clouds?

So You Wanna Chase Clouds? thumbnail

Thu 5 May 2016

ELFC looks at how to create massive amounts of vapour, and more importantly, how to do it safely.

Cloud chasing is a simple concept. Basically, it’s getting the largest possible amount of vapour from your e-cigarette.

If you’re interested in getting into cloud chasing, this guide will help you get started. However, cloud chasing isn’t without its risks. We will not recommend any products or practises that could result in battery failure or potential injury.

To start filling your house with thick fog, you will need the following:

High Powered Mod

Having a mod that can push through the 100 watt barrier is essential. We recommend dual 18650, triple 18650 and lithium polymer battery mods such as the Reuleaux rx200, Koopor Plus, Vaporflask Classic, Joyetech Cuboid and DNA200 powered devices. Be aware that dual 18650 mods advertised as 200 watt devices will not produce this amount of power throughout the life of the batteries. It is common for cloud chasers to use mechanical and unregulated mods. However, we cannot recommend these as they do not have built-in safety features to protect users.

Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer

Rebuildable dripping atomizers (RDAs) are better than tanks for cloud chasing because they often have more airflow and less wicking issues. Having a lot of airflow is important for vapour production. RDAs with a lot of airflow include the Twisted Messes, Phenotype and Velocity. It is essential to have a low resistance dual coil build in your RDA. Most high powered mods will allow you to fire coils with resistances of 0.1ohm or higher.

High Drain Battery Cells

Unless your mod has a built-in lithium polymer battery, you’ll need at least two 18650 cells. It is very important that you use batteries with high amp limits. We recommend the Sony VTC4 and VTC5, the LG HG2 and the Samsung 25r.

Wick and Wire

To make low resistance coils you’ll need low gauge kanthal wire (20awg and 22awg). You’ll also need a screwdriver or coil making tool to wrap the coils. Organic Muji or Koh Gen Do cotton is usually used as wicking material.

High VG E-Liquid

VG is much thicker than PG. This means it doesn’t carry flavour as well, but it also means that it produces more vapour. When it comes to cloud chasing, the higher the VG content of your e-liquid the better. We recommend a 70% VG minimum. Also, it is essential that you use low nicotine e-liquid. We recommend 3mg or lower when vaping at over 100 watts.

Technique

To get the largest possible clouds, you’ll need to draw the vapour directly into your lungs and inhale for as long as possible.

This is just a simple guide on how to produce large amounts of vapour. Seasoned cloud chasers will rightly point out that there’s a lot more to it than this. Remember, battery safety is very important. Pushing batteries beyond their limits can result in battery failure and potential injury.
